Do I have hearing loss?
Suffering from hearing loss may be very subtle in the beginning. You may not even notice the earliest symptoms of hearing loss, though recognizing these symptoms early can help you work with your doctor to treat and even prevent hearing loss. The most common early signs of hearing loss include:
- often feeling as though those around you are mumbling
- others telling you the television or radio is loud, but you feel it is at a normal volume
- you find yourself asking others to repeat themselves often
- it is especially difficult to hear others in a crowded or noisy environment, like a restaurant
- you find yourself needing to concentrate especially hard on conversations
- talking on the telephone is especially difficult or frustrating
Diagnosing Hearing Loss
If you think you may suffer from hearing loss, your doctor will probably suggest a hearing test. This test involves wearing a pair of headphones and listening for noises played at different frequencies. You will indicate in which ear you hear the noise. The test helps your doctor determine the extent and severity of your hearing loss.

Could your runny nose and nasal congestion be symptoms of sinusitis? Dr. Kirby Scott in Hagerstown and Frederick, MD, at Central ENT Consultants shares symptoms of sinusitis and discusses treatment options.
What is sinusitis?
Sinusitis occurs when your sinuses become inflamed or infected. The condition often occurs after you've had a cold or other virus. Unlike a cold, sinusitis doesn't get better in a week or two but can last as long as a month if you have acute sinusitis. The condition becomes chronic when you still experience symptoms for three months or longer.
In addition to viruses and bacterial infections, sinusitis can also be triggered by allergies, gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), nasal polyps, a deviated septum, immune system disorders or asthma.
What are the symptoms of sinusitis?
Nasal congestion, a runny nose and postnasal drip are common complaints if you have sinusitis. Postnasal drip may make you feel nauseated in the morning and can also trigger bouts of coughing. When you blow your nose, the thick discharge may be yellow or green. The condition can cause pain and tenderness under your eyes, the bridge of your nose and on your forehead. If you bend over, you may notice an uncomfortable pressure in your cheeks, forehead and nose.
Pain isn't always limited to your nose and face. You may also experience it in your ears and teeth. It's not unusual to assume you have a toothache when sinusitis is really the cause of your pain. Not surprisingly, you probably won't feel well if you have a sinusitis. Headaches, fevers and fatigue are common.
How is sinusitis treated?
When you visit our Frederick or Hagerstown office, we can recommend a variety of treatments that will help you recover from sinusitis, including:
- Prescription decongestants to thin and reduce mucus
- Nasal corticosteroid sprays or oral corticosteroids that decrease congestion and inflammation
- Antibiotics to treat bacterial infections responsible for sinusitis

- Allergy medication to reduce allergy symptoms that can cause sinusitis
