The first step in effectively managing your allergy symptoms is to identify the underlying triggers. You may notice that your eyes become itchy, dry, or watery, or that your throat becomes dry when you spend time outdoors during certain times of year. Or maybe your nose becomes runny and you begin to sneeze when you vacuum or mow the lawn. You may be suffering from a seasonal allergy, or be allergic to mold or dust.

Types of Allergies

The incidence of food allergies, especially among young children, has been on the rise in the last few decades according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to food allergies, other common types of allergies include:

  • Pet Dander
  • Pollen
  • Mold
  • Dust
  • Medication
  • Insect bites and stings

Allergy symptoms range in severity, and treatment can range from lifestyle and diet modifications designed to avoid triggers and allergens, to medication. Depending on the type and severity of your allergies, symptoms can affect your eyes, nose, ears and throat. Chronic allergy symptoms can also affect your overall quality of life.

Spring and summer are most often associated with allergies, because of hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis. Hay fever is an allergy to grasses, pollens, trees, and plants that flower during the spring and summer months.

If you have allergies during the fall and winter, you could be allergic to dust mites, mold, or mildew. You might also be allergic to your pets, because you are spending a lot of time inside with them.

If you have allergies all year long, you may also be allergic to certain foods. Common food allergies include peanuts and shellfish. Food allergies may cause breathing problems among other issues, and breathing difficulty can be life threatening.

If you have allergies, you need to stop in and see your doctor for allergy testing to determine what you are allergic to. Determining the exact cause of your allergies is the first step in dealing with common allergies.

Your doctors at Central ENT Consultants will develop an effective treatment plan for you which may include allergy injections given once each week. Your doctor may suggest sublingual drop therapy as a more convenient alternative. You will be given a special solution which you can take with you. Drops are taken each day, as an alternative to the injections.

You should also try to control your exposure to allergens by:

  • Vacuuming frequently
  • Using hypo-allergenic linens and pillowcases
  • Placing HEPA filters in bedroom and house
  • Keeping your pets out of your bedroom and off of furniture

Let our ear, nose and throat specialists tackle your chronic conditions.Sleep Apnea

Have you just recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea and feeling confused about how to best manage your new condition? Does the change in weather suddenly have you sneezing, coughing and feeling like you can’t win the battle against your allergies? Luckily, if you are dealing with these problems our Hagerstown and Frederick, MD, otolaryngologist, Dr. Kirby Scott, is here to help.

Sleep Apnea

In many cases, sleep apnea and loud snoring go hand in hand. Since untreated sleep apnea can lead to some pretty serious health complications it’s important that you seek the care of an ENT doctor as soon as possible. We can work with you and your sleep specialists to create a treatment plan that will get you sleeping better sooner. While CPAP tends to be the standard when it comes to keeping airways open while you sleep, there are also other options that may be able to handle more serious forms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

One surgical procedure known as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a great treatment for both those suffering from loud snoring and OSA. By removing excessive tissue in the throat we can help ensure that airways stay open while you are asleep.

There are many different kinds of allergies that one can suffer from including foods, medications, insect bites or stings, as well as seasonal allergies (e.g. pollen; mold). If you have seasonal allergies and over-the-counter allergy medications aren’t doing the trick then it’s time to talk to our Hagerstown and Frederick ENT doctor about prescription antihistamines and other medications that can help get your symptoms under control.

Of course, there are certain lifestyle changes that can also improve your allergy symptoms. This includes using a HEPA-filter air purifier that will trap spores, dusting and vacuuming all furniture and surfaces at least once a week, wearing a protective mask when out in the garden, bathing pets regularly and avoiding cigarette smoke.

Central ENT Consultants in Hagerstown and Frederick, MD, provides comprehensive ear, nose, and throat care so that regardless of whether you need to manage your allergy symptoms better or you are dealing with hearing loss our team is here to help.

Don’t let allergies ruin your ability to enjoy the glorious spring weather!allergies

Springtime can be absolutely lovely. It’s a time to say goodbye to the cold winter weather for good, revamp your closet and open the windows. That is, if you don’t suffer from spring allergies. If you are fighting with a runny nose, congestion and watery eyes, then our Frederick and Hagerstown, MD, otolaryngologist, Dr. Kirby Scott, has ways to tackle your allergies this spring.

Know When to Go Outside

While we won’t say that you have to stay cooped up all spring (because what’s the fun in that?), you may want to avoid going outdoors on particularly blustery days or very early in the morning, particularly if you are allergic to pollen. Wearing sunglasses may also be able to protect your eyes from the nasty effects of pollen. Once you come in from your outdoor excursion, whether it’s running errands or spending time in your garden, make sure to shower immediately and put your clothes in the laundry to prevent the spread of pollen in your home.

Use Medication

There is some trial and error to figuring out what kinds of medications to take when allergies flare up. The allergy medications that work best for you will really depend on your symptoms. Have a runny nose? Then opt for an over-the-counter antihistamine. Suffer from some pretty serious allergies? Then it’s time to use a nasal spray. If over-the-counter medications aren’t cutting it, then it’s time to talk to our Frederick and Hagerstown ENT doctor about whether prescription medications or even allergy shots are better suited for your needs.

Turn on the Air Conditioning

While a beautiful spring day may have you desperately wanting to open the windows and enjoy the fresh air, what is blowing around in the air may just cause watery, itchy eyes and other issues. Therefore, it’s best to play it safe and just turn on the air conditioner. We know it won’t be as refreshing as the great outdoors, but your allergies will certainly thank you.

Know How to Clean Your Home

How you clean your home can also affect your allergies. When it comes to shopping around for a vacuum, make sure that you always use one with a HEPA filter. This will help trap a lot of that allergy-causing crud so that you don’t just breathe it in. Make sure to vacuum all furniture, floors, rugs and other surfaces at least once a week.

If you have questions about managing your allergy symptoms then turn to the expert at Central ENT Consultants. Don’t let your allergies get in the way of enjoying the beautiful outdoors.

Waking up one day to find yourself in the midst of an allergy attack is not the most exciting way to realize that spring is in the air. Luckily, allergiesyour otolaryngologists can help you narrow down what causes your allergies, manage your symptoms, and find the best treatment option for you. Find out more about allergies and how your doctor can help with Central ENT Consultants with offices in Hagerstown and Frederick, MD.

What causes allergies?
Allergies occur when your body’s immune system mistakenly overreacts to an allergen or a substance which causes an allergic reaction. The allergens could be anything from certain foods to pollen to dust or mold. However, the body’s reaction is often the same. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include:

  • red, watery eyes
  • sneezing
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • wheezing
  • itchy eyes
  • shortness of breath
  • an itchy red rash (hives)

Allergic reactions to food often produce symptoms like itchy or tingling mouth, abdominal pain or discomfort, hives, swelling of the face, including the lips, throat, and tongue, and wheezing.

Allergy Testing in Hagerstown and Frederick, MD
Avoiding allergens is the best way to avoid the allergic reactions that come with them. You must, however, know exactly which allergens to avoid for this method to work. Allergy testing uses a process of elimination to determine what substances you are allergic to. Most allergy testing occurs in the form of a scratch test. This test involves placing tiny amounts of allergens onto the skin, then scratching the skin to allow it to enter. If the skin reacts to the substance, you are allergic to it. If there is no reaction, you do not have an allergy to that substance. Allergy testing can also take the form of a blood test to search for the presence of antibodies produced by your body to fight off the allergen.

Allergy Treatments
Treating allergies begins with avoiding the allergen itself. For example, if your doctor finds you to be allergic to cats, avoiding homes with cats in them can keep your allergic reactions away. Since simply avoiding allergens is not always possible, especially with allergens like pollen or grass, oral antihistamines can help get your allergic reaction under control. Nasal sprays are also helpful in managing allergy symptoms.
