Have you just recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea and feeling confused about how to best manage your new condition? Does the change in weather suddenly have you sneezing, coughing and feeling like you can’t win the battle against your allergies? Luckily, if you are dealing with these problems our Hagerstown and Frederick, MD, otolaryngologist, Dr. Kirby Scott, is here to help.

Sleep Apnea

In many cases, sleep apnea and loud snoring go hand in hand. Since untreated sleep apnea can lead to some pretty serious health complications it’s important that you seek the care of an ENT doctor as soon as possible. We can work with you and your sleep specialists to create a treatment plan that will get you sleeping better sooner. While CPAP tends to be the standard when it comes to keeping airways open while you sleep, there are also other options that may be able to handle more serious forms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

One surgical procedure known as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a great treatment for both those suffering from loud snoring and OSA. By removing excessive tissue in the throat we can help ensure that airways stay open while you are asleep.

Allergies

There are many different kinds of allergies that one can suffer from including foods, medications, insect bites or stings, as well as seasonal allergies (e.g. pollen; mold). If you have seasonal allergies and over-the-counter allergy medications aren’t doing the trick then it’s time to talk to our Hagerstown and Frederick ENT doctor about prescription antihistamines and other medications that can help get your symptoms under control.

Of course, there are certain lifestyle changes that can also improve your allergy symptoms. This includes using a HEPA-filter air purifier that will trap spores, dusting and vacuuming all furniture and surfaces at least once a week, wearing a protective mask when out in the garden, bathing pets regularly and avoiding cigarette smoke.

Although many common allergies develop in childhood, they can affect people of all ages. Because they can develop at any time, many people are living with undiagnosed allergies to food, medications, environmental pollutants and animal dander. Allergy symptoms can overlap with many other medical conditions, and therefore can be easy to overlook or misdiagnose. The ear, nose and throat doctors at Central ENT Consultants, P.C. in Frederick and Hagerstown, MD provide diagnosis and treatment for food, medicine and environmental related allergies for pediatric and adult patients.

Allergy Diagnosis and Treatment in Frederick and Hagerstown

As many as 50 million Americans suffer from some type of allergy and sensitivity to a specific food or medication. Symptoms range in severity from mild to extreme, depending on the type of allergy and the individual. Seasonal allergies to environmental stimulants like pollen, ragweed, dust, grass and mold spores may only produce mild symptoms like sneezing and watery eyes in some people, and more severe flu-like symptoms in others, depending on the season.

Allergies from foods like peanuts or gluten, or medications like penicillin can lead to potentially serious complications if left undiagnosed.

The most common symptoms of undiagnosed food allergies include:

  • Itchy palate/throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Unexplained fatigue and exhaustion
  • Frequent indigestion/stomach pains after meals
  • Bloating
  • Blotchy skin/rash
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Memory loss and difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty sleeping

Common seasonal allergies can generally be treated with antihistamines and lifestyle modifications designed to avoid the allergy triggers. An ear, nose and throat doctor at Central ENT Consultants, P.C. will perform a comprehensive exam to determine if your symptoms are caused by allergies, and design an appropriate treatment plan.

Allergies Find out what could be the cause of your allergy symptoms and what you can do to combat them.

If you suffer from allergies in Hagerstown, chances are good that you’re trying to pinpoint the culprit. Find out if your symptoms could be caused by an environmental trigger and how you can best reduce your allergy problems.

Pollen: This is one of the most common allergies around, and, unfortunately, it can be a bit difficult to avoid. While avoidance is the best way to reduce your symptoms it can feel nearly impossible to avoid outdoor triggers unless you lock yourself in the house. Therefore, more practical options include taking over-the-counter or prescription antihistamines or nasal steroids to prevent itching, sneezing and itchy eyes.

However, for those with more severe symptoms, your Hagerstown ENT doctor might discuss the possibility of allergy shots, which can reduce your symptoms for the long-term.

Dust mites: While you might think of allergies and immediately think of outdoor factors, there are also environmental triggers that live indoors like your very own home. For example, dust mites are microscopic bugs that thrive in bedding, carpets and furniture.

While they don’t bite like bed bugs, they can cause congestion, headaches and sinus problems. However, by maintaining good home care you can reduce your dust mite symptoms. Using an air purifier with a HEPA filter can help to keep the air around you clean. Be sure to vacuum furniture and carpets regularly and wash your bedding in warm water at least once a week.

Pets: We all feel like our pets are family so we hate to point fingers; however, your allergy symptoms could be the result of pet dander. However, you don’t have to part ways with your trusty sidekick in order to experience some relief. Bathing your pets each week can go a long way to reducing your exposure to not only their dander but the outdoor allergens they pick up in their fur. Also, since allergens can also be found in an animal’s urine or saliva you’ll want to limit exposure to your cat’s litter box, as well.

Mold and mildew: If you find your allergy symptoms kicking into full gear around the fall season, then you may have an allergy to mold or mildew. To minimize your symptoms your Hagerstown ENT doctor recommends avoiding leave piles and remove plant debris from around your yard and home. You a dehumidifier in your home to decrease humidity and limit how many plants are in your home. A HEPA-filter air conditioner can also reduce your mold and mild allergy symptoms.

Cigarettes: While we don’t often consider cigarette smoke as an allergen, this smoke can exacerbate environmental allergies. Since the lining of your nose, sinuses and lungs are already irritated and inflamed from environmental factors, they can become worse when around cigarettes or strong perfumes. Avoid cigarettes altogether if you suffer from environmental allergies.
